ABOUT E-LEARNING

UoPeople is a unique learning experience.  UoPeople recognizes that many students may not have studied online before – it is quite different to traditional classroom-based learning.  It is vital that UoPeople students are fully prepared with regard to our online learning methods and processes and that they have the required level of English to enable them to successfully study in this environment.  Consequently, UoPeople has developed a series of orientation courses that are mandatory for all students.

Comprised of students from around the world, the student body will learn through the peer-to-peer teaching method with the support of Instructors. Within the online study communities, students will share resources, exchange ideas, discuss weekly topics, submit assignments, and take exams.

The curriculum itself will be supported by respected scholars. A community of educators, comprised of active and retired professors, master level students and other professionals, will participate and oversee the assessment process. They will also develop ongoing procedures for curriculum evaluation and development.

The educational idea behind the project is that studying within peer-to-peer communities is more motivating than just reading alone or listening to online lectures. Preliminary results indicate that students become more interested in their topics of study. They also develop confidence in their communication skills, abilities and knowledge of their courses.

*Distance learning is a growing trend in the U.S. According to a survey by the Sloan Consortium, approximately 4 million students are enrolled in online education. As a tuition-free service, the University of the People will take the concept of eLearning to an unprecedentedly broader – worldwide – audience.
